Vinton Recap and Hobby Stock Update

Well, we are getting the bars finished on the Hobby Stock tomorrow, if all goes well.  Then we need to attach the fenders, figure out the nose and then start messing with paint for this year.  Once again, I will have Automotive Fuel Systems as the primary sponsor on the car.  I am also working on a Lil Racer Club Design in which the kids will be able to put their name on a star on the car.

Vinton thoughts

The first feature tonight was the Sportmods with 15 cars on hand.  Outside front ro w starter Jared VanDeest took the early lead.  About 4 laps into the feature VanDeest and Kyle Olson made contact for the lead.  VanDeest came out on the short end of the stick with a broken front end bringing out the first of two cautions.  Kyle Olson took off from there and wnet on the take the feature win.  Jim Buhlman, Danny Dvorak, Jesse Belez, and Curt Hilmer rounded out the unofficial top 5.  Heat races were won by Mike McDonald and Buhlman.

Next up was the IMCA Hobby Stocks.  12 cars checked in to do battle.  Jacob Keisor was the early leader.  The first of 4 cautions flew when Nathan Ballard was stopped in the bottom of turn 4 after contact between him and Cale Peterson after one lap was scored complete.  Prior to the second caution waving, Doug Laughridge made his way around Keisor for the lead.  The second caution flew for the 09 of Breydon Forbes, who was stopped in the middle of turns one and two after contact with Ballard sent him spinning.  Before the caution flew, Ballard was going the wrong way into turn 2, heading towards the pits on the wrong road that the cars enter the racetrack from.  This earned Ballard a black-flag for exiting the track improperly.  Around lap 8, point leader Scott Pippert made his way around Laughridge and went on to take the checkers.  Laughridge, Matt Brown, August Bach, and Keisoer were the unofficial top 5.  Heat races were won by Keisor and Justin Stander.

The Sport Compacts were next with 16 cars on hand tonight.  Adam Gates was the early leader, but by halfway Nathan Chandler passed Gates and set sail for the feature win.  The race was slowed by one caution when Merv Chandler's car broke the front suspension while Merv was running in 3rd place with 2 laps to go.  Last week's winner, Steve Meidke, Bill Whalen, Jr, Brett Vanous, and Jacob McVey were the unofficial top 5.  Heat races were won by Whalen, Jr and N Chandler.

IMCA Stock Cars were next with 14 cars set to determine who would take home the trophy.  Jon Emerson took the early lead from the pole, but it was short lived as Jason DeShaw made the pass around lap 5.  Four separate cautions for single car spins would keep the pack close.  Damon Murty took over the lead from DeShaw on the white flag lap and would hold on to win yet another feature at Benton ounty Speedway.  The unoffiial top 3 was DeShaw and Emerson.  Heat races were won by Emerson and DeShaw.

The final feature was the "Knights of Thunder" (my term for them) IMCA Modifieds.  18 cars were on hand tonight with Troy Cordes taking the early lead.  Richie Gustin passed Cordes with a handful of laps in the books.  Four seaparate cautions for single cars spins would keep it close.  Scott Hogan finished in second with Cordes third.  Last week's winner Patrick Flannagan and Joe Docekal rounded out the top 5.  Heat races were won by Cordes, Docekal, and Ronn Lauritzen.

That's it for now and hopefully my next post will be in the driver's seat at Hawkeye Downs in the next week or two.  Take care and we'll see you, from the driver;s seat.
